Series Loss Makes Race an Issue Again in Boston

When Joel Ward scored the game winning OT goal last night some Boston fans took to twitter and used racial slurs while venting their frustration. Most people realize this is not representative of all Boston fans, given the history or race relations in the city it will always touch a nerve.

All New Englanders, not just Bostonians think of Boston as the greatest city in the world and the hub of the universe. Anything that paints the city in a negative light will raise the dander of the locals. Those of us who weren’t around in the 70′s and didn’t throw bricks at busses or defecate in Bill Russell’s bed don’t think of Boston as a racist city anymore and are anxious to dispel the notion.

For people who still think of Boston as a racist city this is more ammunition for them. Hopefully more people realize that in a region of over a million people that these ignoramuses are a tiny minority. The majority of Bruin fans are intimately classier than that. When the Montreal fans booed the “Star Spangled Banner” during a playoff game the Boston fans responded by giving “Oh Canada” a rousing standing ovation. If Ward received a similar response the next time he sets foot on the Garden Ice it would show the world what Boston fans are really all about.
